Inside Algeria's Record-Breaking Mosque with the World's Tallest Minaret

Algiers, Algeria

Standing in front of Djamaa el Djazaïr, I had to tilt my head all the way back just to see the top of the minaret. My neck actually hurt. This mosque is massive. I mean, really massive. The Mediterranean Sea sparkles behind it. The white marble shines under the African sun. I have visited many mosques around the world. But this one made me feel so small. In a beautiful way. This is the third largest mosque on Earth. And it has the tallest minaret ever built by humans.

The minaret here is 265 metres tall. That is taller than the Eiffel Tower without its antenna.

How Bouteflika's Vision Became Reality

This mosque is very new. Construction started in 2012. It opened its doors in 2019. President Abdelaziz Bouteflika wanted to build something special for Algeria. He dreamed of a mosque that would be remembered for centuries. The project cost around 2 billion US dollars. Yes, you read that right. 2 billion dollars. China State Construction Engineering Company helped build it. German engineers designed the earthquake protection system. This was important because Algeria sits in an earthquake zone. The design mixes modern technology with traditional Islamic architecture. The minaret stands at 265 meters tall. To understand how tall that is, think about this. India's tallest building is only 120 meters. Pakistan's tallest is 300 meters. So this minaret is almost as tall as Pakistan's tallest building. But it is just a minaret, not a full building. Until recently, it was also the tallest structure in all of Africa. Egypt's Iconic Tower has now taken that title. But the minaret remains the tallest religious tower in the world. The mosque complex covers 400,000 square meters. It includes a library, a Quran school, and a museum.

The Third Holiest Mosque Globally

After Masjid al Haram in Makkah and Masjid Nabawi in Madinah, this is the biggest mosque in the world. It can hold 120,000 worshippers at one time. Think about that number. That is like filling a huge football stadium. For Algerian Muslims, this mosque is a source of deep pride. Algeria fought hard for independence from France in 1962. Building the largest mosque in Africa felt like a statement. It showed the world that Algeria is strong. The mosque also has an observation deck at the top of the minaret. From there, you can see the beautiful Mediterranean Sea. You can watch the entire city of Algiers below you. For history lovers, the design is special. It honors traditional Moorish and Ottoman styles. But it uses modern materials and technology. The prayer hall has stunning geometric patterns. The chandeliers are enormous.

Did You Know? The minaret has a built-in helipad near the top. It also has special technology that can withstand earthquakes up to magnitude 9 on the Richter scale.

Elevate Your Visit to the Top
