I could see it from the airplane window. This massive copper and brass figure towering over everything in Bali. When I finally stood at its feet, my neck hurt from looking up. The Garuda Wisnu Kencana statue is something else. It is taller than the Statue of Liberty. Yes, you read that right. Standing here, I felt so small. The afternoon sun made the copper shine like gold. This is one of those places where photos just cannot capture how huge it really is.
From Vision to Reality in Thirty Years
Let me tell you the story of this incredible statue. It took almost 30 years to complete. Can you imagine working on one project for three decades? The artist who designed it was a man named Nyoman Nuarta. He started working on the idea back in 1989. But the actual construction began in 1997. Then money problems happened. The Asian financial crisis hit Indonesia hard. Work stopped for many years. People thought it might never get finished. But they did not give up. Finally, in August 2018, the statue was completed. It was finished just in time for the Asian Games that Indonesia hosted. The statue shows the Hindu god Vishnu riding his bird companion Garuda. In Hindu stories, Garuda is a powerful eagle that carries Vishnu across the sky. The statue stands 121 meters tall. That includes its base. Just the statue part is 75 meters. The Statue of Liberty is 93 meters with its base. So yes, this one is bigger. It weighs around 4000 tons. They used copper and brass sheets to cover the outside. Inside, there is a steel frame holding everything together. The whole statue is made of 754 separate pieces. Workers had to fit them together like a giant puzzle. It sits on a limestone hill in the Bukit Peninsula area of Bali.
Why Bali's Hindu Heart Needed This Giant
Bali is different from the rest of Indonesia. Most Indonesians are Muslim. But in Bali, most people follow Hinduism. This is why you see so many statues and temples across the island. The Garuda Wisnu Kencana is special for the Balinese people. It shows their culture and beliefs. For them, Vishnu represents protection and peace. Garuda stands for freedom and loyalty. Together, they mean something beautiful. This statue has become a symbol of Bali itself. When planes land at the airport, passengers can see it from the sky. It welcomes visitors to the island. The cultural park around it hosts concerts and events. Traditional dance shows happen here regularly. For history lovers like me, it is amazing to see modern artists creating such huge monuments. It proves that people still build incredible things today. Not everything old is in the past. Some landmarks are being made right now.
Did You Know? The Garuda Wisnu Kencana statue is so big that it has an underground parking area that can hold 1000 cars right beneath it. And the statue is designed to last for at least 100 years without major repairs.
Plan Your Day at the Cultural Park
The park opens from 8 AM to 9 PM daily. Ticket prices are around 125,000 Indonesian Rupiah for foreigners. That is about 8 US dollars. You can walk around the whole cultural park. There are food courts and souvenir shops inside. Wear comfortable shoes because there is lots of walking. Go in the late afternoon for the best photos. The sunset light makes everything look golden. Try to catch a traditional Balinese dance show if you can. The park is about 20 minutes from the airport.
