Old Masjid Nabawi Replica in Bahria Town: A Beautiful Tribute

Lahore, Pakistan

Inside Bahria Town Lahore, near the Grand Jamia Mosque, there is a full scale replica of how the original Masjid Nabawi looked over 1400 years ago. Mud brick walls. Palm trunk pillars. A simple open courtyard. No marble. No golden domes. Just raw, humble construction the way the Prophet ﷺ built it himself. I stood in front of it and could not believe someone in Pakistan built this.

What Is This Replica and Where Exactly Is It

Bahria Town Lahore built this model as a tribute next to their Grand Jamia Mosque, which is one of the largest mosques in Pakistan. The replica is a scale model of the very first Masjid Nabawi as it stood in 622 CE when the Prophet ﷺ built it with his own hands after migrating to Madinah. The original was simple. About 30 by 35 meters. Mud brick walls, date palm trunk columns, and a roof of woven palm leaves. No minarets, no domes, nothing grand. This model captures all of that faithfully. Standing beside the towering Grand Jamia Mosque of Bahria Town, the contrast is striking. One shows where Islam began. The other shows how far it has grown. Both are worth seeing on the same visit.

What the Experience Feels Like

Most Pakistani Muslims have seen the massive modern Masjid Nabawi in pictures or on television. You see the white marble, the giant umbrellas, the green dome. But almost nobody knows what it looked like at the very start. When you walk up to this replica in Bahria Town, that changes instantly. The walls are rough. The pillars look genuinely old. The scale gives you a real sense of how small and simple it was. You start to understand the sacrifice. The Companions built this under the sun with whatever they had. The Prophet ﷺ carried bricks himself. For families, especially children, this is one of the best ways to teach Islamic history without a book. The Grand Jamia Mosque beside it also has beautiful architecture worth exploring before or after.

Did You Know? The original Masjid Nabawi had no minaret. Bilal ibn Rabah, the first muezzin, used to climb onto the roof of a nearby house to give the call to prayer. The first minaret was only added decades later.
