I stood in the lobby of this hotel near Masjid Nabawi and felt goosebumps. Right there on the wall was a hadith about Hazrat Usman. This is not just any hotel. It was built from profits of a well that was donated over 1400 years ago. Can you believe that? A simple act of kindness from the time of Prophet Muhammad is still running today. Still helping people. Still making money for orphans and the poor. I had to learn more about this incredible story.
How Usman Transformed a Desert Well
Let me take you back to the early days of Islam in Madinah. There was a well called Bir Rumah. It belonged to a Jewish man. He would sell water to the Muslims. Water was precious in the desert. Hazrat Usman ibn Affan, one of the closest companions of Prophet Muhammad, decided to help. He bought the well from the Jewish man. Then he did something beautiful. He made it waqf. This means he donated it forever for public use. Anyone could drink from it for free. People say the water tasted a bit like Zamzam. Years passed. Decades passed. Centuries passed. Trees started growing around the well. Slowly, these trees became a garden. A big orchard with date palms. When the Ottoman Empire came, they took proper care of this garden. They made sure it kept growing. By the time the Saudi government took over, there were more than 1500 trees in this orchard. The profits from selling dates were split into two parts. One part went directly to orphans and poor people. The other part was saved in a bank account. This account was in the name of Hazrat Usman. After many years, enough money had collected to buy land near Masjid Nabawi. A hotel was built on that land. Today it is called Funduq Waqf Usman bin Affan. The same system continues. Half the hotel profits go to charity. Half goes back into the waqf fund.
Charity That Outlived Its Founder by Fourteen Centuries
This place shows us something amazing about Islamic charity. A good deed done 1400 years ago is still alive today. Still growing. Still helping people. Hazrat Usman could not have imagined a hotel. He just bought a well so people could drink water. But Allah made it grow into something much bigger. For Muslims, this is a powerful lesson. Your charity can outlive you by centuries. The hadith displayed in the hotel lobby says that after this act, no bad deed would harm Usman. That is how special this waqf was. For history lovers, this is proof that waqf is one of the oldest charity systems still working. It has survived empires and governments. The well still exists today. You can visit it. The trees are still there. And the hotel stands as living proof that small acts of kindness can create ripples forever.
Did You Know? The bank account in Hazrat Usman's name has been active for decades and is still receiving deposits from the hotel profits today. A companion of the Prophet literally has a working bank account in 2026.
Reaching Rumah from Masjid Nabawi Today
The well of Rumah is about 5 kilometers from Masjid Nabawi. You can take a taxi or join a ziyarat tour. The area around the well has the old trees still growing. Entry is free. The hotel itself is near Masjid Nabawi if you want to stay there. Best time to visit the well is morning when it is cooler. Take water with you. Wear comfortable shoes for walking around the orchard area.
